ZASF

ZASF (Zonas Autônomas Sem Fio - portuguese for Wireless Autonomous Zones or WAZ) is an ongoing development on creating open wireless networks that instead of giving access to the internet offer different sorts of local network services. It is being developed by Desvio in Brasil, and is related to the MetaReciclagem network.

There is nothing in this project that is essentially new or hasn't been done before. Wireless autonomous zones can be thought of as a very flexible platform. A common use case would be creating open networks on public spaces. Anybody with wi-fi enabled devices (laptops, smartphones, PDAs, etc.) would be able to connect to the network. Only that, whenever they tried to access any website their browser would be redirected to a local website that offers information that is only available in that specific place. They would also be offered a irc chat server and access to a repository of software, free media and the like. Besides, all the schematics, how-tos and software needed to replicate that network in other contexts could be offered as a free download.

A working prototype of zasf will be presented during the 2009 edition of Mobilefest in São Paulo, BR.
